La "Mer de Glace" is the biggest glacier in France and the 4th biggest of the Alpes. The painter Carl Gustav Carus painted in 1821 the valley of the "Mer de Glace" and showed the painting "Das Eismeer von Chamonix" in Dresden in 1824. In the same year Caspar David Friedrich painted the motiv in his painting "Das Hochgebirge", 1824, and painted the valley without the glacier, but with an open view to the Grandes Jorasses.
